Orchid species in Mexico

Orchids are one of the largest families of plants in the world, with about 30.000 species. Mexico has around 1250 species of orchids, with an estimated 40% being endemic. This makes Mexican orchid flora one of the richest in Central and Latin America. In Mexico, the greatest orchid diversity is found in the tropical areas; in humid lowlands and in temperate mountainous areas. Species growing in the southeast region of the country tend to be shared with countries like Guatemala, Belize and El Salvador. Endemism is concentrated in Western mountain ranges.

The beauty of Mexican orchids has been recognized since pre-Hispanic times, where they were used to decorate temples, tombs and gardens. Today, however, several Mexico's orchids are in danger of disappearing due to deforestation and looting. It is common to see areas wher orchid hunters heedlessly tear orchids from their native habitat with little respect to their survival. New conservation efforts and the establishment of natural reserves are helping, but it's not enough yet. Please enjoy orchids in their natural habitats where they are truly the most beautiful.
